APP Family Medicine Fellowship Program
(formerly known as FNP Residency Program)

Our Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Physician Assistant Fellowship Training Program provides comprehensive training so providers can bring healthier lives for all their patients.
Program goals
The NeighborHealth FNP Residency Program aims to:
1. Empower new graduate FNPs and PAs to deliver primary care that’s focused on the patient, supported by a collaborative team, and dedicated to delivering the highest quality care with safety at the forefront.
2. Make a difference in the primary care landscape for patients by expanding the workforce and ensuring that underserved populations have access to top-notch primary care services.
3. Enhance job satisfaction and foster long-term commitment among new nurse practitioners, especially those passionate about making a difference in Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) settings.
4. Cultivate the next generation of healthcare leaders, equipping them with the skills and mindset to pioneer innovative approaches in primary care.
The program includes precepted primary care sessions, specialty rotations, didactic sessions, and quality improvement training for broad, diverse, and structured training.
NeighborHealth offers three fellowship slots for this intensive training program. The APP Fellowship is a full-time, 12-month salaried position based at NeighborHealth sites in East Boston, Winthrop, and the South End. Programs start in September and run through the end of August the following year.
Applicants must commit to the full duration of the residency.
NeighborHealth invites postgraduate family nurse practitioners (FNP) and physician assistants to apply. Bilingual candidates are highly encouraged.
Program description
Our 12-month, full-time residency provides new Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Physician Assistant graduates (within 18 months of graduation) with the foundation to build their careers as a primary care provider in community-focused health centers. The APP Fellowship is a highly structured one year of clinical training that provides mentorship in a high-performance model of care. By the end of the program, fellows will have gained the competence, mastery, and confidence needed to be a primary care provider that serves culturally diverse and clinically complex patients.
More about our program:
- Fellows have a minimum of 6 primary care precepted sessions per week, with each session 4 hours in length. Fellows will have individualized productivity ramp up plans. A procedure clinic is also part of the primary care sessions.
- Dedicated preceptors provide direct supervision and consultation during the precepted sessions.
- Fellows have 1 session per week of a specialty rotation at NeighborHealth. Examples of specialty rotations include: Pediatrics, Sports Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Women’s Health (OB/GYN).
- Each week includes a dedicated 4-hour session of didactic teaching that draws upon the expertise of NeighborHealth staff and affiliates.
- Fellows work with our Quality Improvement (QI) team 4 hours per month to develop a QI initiative over their fellowship year.
- As a community health center, our knowledge base and service emphasis extend beyond the four walls of our clinics. The communities we serve tend to have significantly lower life expectancy and higher incidence of chronic disease; these topics will be highlighted and addressed throughout the fellowship.
- Leadership and professional development skills are taught during clinical sessions and didactic sessions. Our goal is to build on the skills our fellows currently have and ultimately develop our fellows into leaders, teachers, and role models for future students and fellows.

Hours
- 10 4-hour sessions per week, broken down as:
- 6 precepted sessions/week in Family Medicine, including a procedure clinic
- 1 education session/week (didactic/seminar/workshop)
- 3 additional sessions per week:
- Administrative time
- QI project and Population Management
- Specialty Rotations including Behavioral Health, Sports Medicine, OB/GYN, and more.

Evaluation methods
- Pre- and post-fellowship self-evaluation
- Quarterly faculty evaluation of each fellow

- September 2025: Fellowship begins
