EBNHC Breaks Ground in Winthrop

Over 100 people gathered in Winthrop Square on September 30, 2011, for an official groundbreaking of EBNHC’s new Winthrop Community Health Center. In attendance were representatives of the health center, local and state officials including Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo, and business leaders and neighbors from the community.

A short speaking program was kicked off by EBNHC's CMO Emeritus, Dr. James Taylor. Also speaking from EBNHC were CEO John Cradock, CMO Dr. Mari Bentley, Deputy CEO Manny Lopes, and Board of Directors Chair Rita Sorrento. All touched upon how excited they were to have a new facility in Winthrop and how the new location will help serve EBNHC’s growing patient population in Winthrop.

House Speaker DeLeo, a Winthrop native, spoke of how vital community health centers are to the commonwealth and how the new Winthrop facility will bring valuable services to his hometown, serving as an economic and social anchor to the Winthrop Square area.

Once complete, the historic renovation will provide 7,400 s/f of facility space for the new health center, including primary care services for adults and children. Much of the exterior will be preserved and renewed, while the interior will be brought up to modern building codes. In addition, the building will include 3,000 s/f of retail space, sub-divided into three stores.

Without question, this development project creates short-term and long-term growth and jobs, at a time when, and in a place where, they are very much needed. The new Winthrop Community Health Center is scheduled to open in early to mid 2012.

Intergenerational Connections—One Smile at a Time

When elders and young people make connections, everyone benefits—the elders, the kids, and the community. Michelle Bettano of Volunteer Services at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center (EBNHC) saw a need in the community for more intergenerational activities and got busy making it happen.

Bettano contacted Principal O'Mard of East Boston’s O'Donnell Elementary School, and Brian Johnston, a third-grade teacher at the school. She also contacted Lindsay Sulprizio, Activities Coordinator at the Elder Service Plan’s Barnes PACE Center, which is just a two-minute walk from the school. Together with Johnston's kids and Sulprizio's adults, this group formed an intergenerational program that had everyone smiling. Read more here.

EBNHC Named to “Best of 2011 Radiology Facilities” List

EBNHC was honored recently when the center was named to the “Best of 2011 Radiology Facilities” List published by Imaging Economics. The list is comprised of facilities throughout the United States that have demonstrated “an overriding commitment to excellence,” according to an editor’s note in the publication. EBNHC Designated Baby Safe Haven

The Emergency Department of the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center (EBNHC) is now officially designated a Baby Safe Haven. The Safe Haven Act of Massachusetts allows a parent facing the last resort to legally surrender a newborn infant 7 days old or younger at a hospital, police station, or manned fire station without criminal prosecution.

EBNHC supports healthy families and works to keep families intact. Unfortunately, in some instances new parents are unable or unwilling to care for an infant and need an immediate solution to a crisis situation. The Safe Haven Act provides a viable alternative to the unsafe abandonment of a newborn that may lead to injury or death.

“We must provide this service to our community,” said Jack Cradock, President and CEO of EBNHC. “This is about saving lives by offering help to those who feel they have no other choice but to relinquish a newborn for its own safety.” Read more here.
